Again, this is MY PERSONAL Top 10
The movies that I have listed are geared towards my personal top 10 tastes. That does not mean that this should be what everyone's top 10 should look like because everyone has different tastes in films. And seeing as the summer season has ended, let's round up my personal favorites.
Number 10
This may surprise some people as to why this is in my top 10, even if it is number 10. But the truth of the matter all boils down to me being a Greek Mythology fanboy. Plus, I've been waiting to see a Hercules movie where he actually looks like Herarcles from the myths with the Lion head, club, and beard. And it has the benefit of being better than it has any right to be. All thanks to The Rock and a cast that knows this movie is not great, but are having a lot of fun doing it.
Number 9
This was definitely one of my most anticipated movies of the summer. I was so happy that they allowed the characters from the first film to grow up and deal with more mature themes while still having the fun spirit of a kids film. However what keeps this movie at number 9 is mainly because of the plot involving the villain. He was a very believable threat, but he is not believable as a great antagonist. It still is the best animated movie of the summer, mainly because it is the only memorable animated movie of the summer.
Number 8
Another one of my most anticipated movies of the summer, and it definitely did not disappoint. For me at least. To put it simply, this movie is pretty much a remake of JAWS which is why I really enjoyed it. This film was a slow burn approach to the monster movie and it also paid homage to the 1954 classic, Gojira. Unlike Pacific Rim, this movie actually brought back my childhood memories of Godzilla as well as a big huge smile on my face while watching it. Yes, I would've loved to see more of the monster battles, but the ending battle was all worth it.
Number 7
After directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, prove they are not just a one trick pony with The Lego Movie, they work their magic once again with 22 Jump Street. In here, the duo proves that their satire of the reboot trend with stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum is definitely a worthy franchise to compete with the big summer blockbusters. While Hill continues to prove that he is a comedy gold mine, Tatum really steps up his comedy range to whole new heights as he once again proves that he is an actor and this effect definitely shows in previews for his upcoming movie Foxcatcher.
Number 6
If one were to say a duo of comedy directors would make a badass political thriller in the form of a superhero movie, I would not have believed that person. However, the Russo Brothers of Community fame prove they are capable directors by putting the heroic Captain America into the world of Modern Day America. This movie does an excellent job of mixing the 70s political thriller into the superhero genre. Unfortunately the overly cliche finale prevents this film from reaching the amount of greatness that everyone else seems to see.
Number 5
Yet another one of my most anticipated movies of the year, and it did not disappoint. Andy Serkis brings his A-Game once again in his second outing as the heroic ape leader, Caesar. He's not alone as rising star Toby Kebbell steps up to play as Caesar's rival and primary antagonist, Koba. It is a powerful film about how communication is really the key to solving and starting all of the world's problems distilled into a singular conflict between apes and humans. I look forward to Matt Reeves' follow up to this near masterpiece of a blockbuster.
Number 4
Korean director, Bong Joon-ho, takes his second step into big budget blockbuster territory in his first English language film. And once again, he does not disappoint. Chris Evans shows he's not just Captain America as he reveals his dynamic range as Curtis who has to lead a rebellion on board a train that holds the entire population of the world. It is an excellent science fiction film that perfectly blends drama, action and dark humor to make for an entertaining experience. It is a shame that this film will not get the recognition it deserves in America.
Number 3
The movie originally known as All You Need Is Kill that later got changed to Edge of Tomorrow for theatrical release and later changed to Live. Die. Repeat. for home video release is one of the most mishandled marketed movies yet also one of the best movies of the summer. It is a shame that Tom Cruise's previous outing in Science Fiction lead many to not have faith in this film, along with the horrible marketing campaign. Don't be fooled, because this film is definitely the most original and excellently made sci-fi action popcorn flick made in a long time.
Number 2
I love this movie. Love it! Marvel's big gamble along with James Gunn at the helm really makes this film a remarkable feat. The magic of this film could almost be akin to what people in the 70s felt when they saw Star Wars for the first time. Just pure magic. With inspiring performances from the five leads, this is definitely the Marvel Film I consider to be better than The Avengers. If only the villains were more developed and threatening. But that's always been a problem with Marvel so... eh, still a problem.
This movie is near perfect. Sure it has some flaws, but they are so minor in that only extreme nitpicking could make this movie terrible. It is the triumphant return of Bryan Singer at the helm, and he doesn't disappoint. Pulling off the monumental task of combining his cast along with Matthew Vaughn's cast from X-Men: First Class was no easy feat. This is their equivalent to The Avengers in bringing everyone together, the only difference is the world actually feels at stake. There is definite drama, amazing action sequences, believable heroes and villains, and most importantly of all a competent time travel story. The performances are top notch, especially James McAvoy's turns as a broken Professor X and Michael Fassbender as the militant Magneto. And despite having 25+ comic book characters crammed into one film, they all worked well in this grand ensemble. It is definitely the best Marvel movie made that benefit by not being made by Marvel Studios. This is the movie I consider the perfect rival for The Dark Knight. It is just that amazing.
